Help - Accessibility Policy

Mamas & Papas is committed to providing a website that is accessible to all. Our audience includes disabled people, the blind or partially sighted and those who suffer with cognitive and motor problems.

The purpose this statement is to explain the measures that we have taken to enhance accessibility. We have considered those who rely on screen readers for their user experience, those who use text-only browsers and people who punch the keyboard to navigate.

If you have any comments or feedback please email us on: customer.care@mamasandpapas.com or call us Monday to Friday, 9am to 5:30pm on: 0845 268 2000.

General information

We aimed to build this site with accessibility for all. Some steps we have made towards this include:

  • The use of XHTML for page structure and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) for style.
  • Avoiding scrolling text or blinking elements.
  • Avoiding using frames
  • Using clear and concise language and commonly used web conventions.

Browser Compatability

We use standards compliant markup, which is rendered correctly in most modern browsers. Compliant browsers include-

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 6
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 7
  • Firefox 1.5
  • Firefox 2
  • Opera 9.x
  • Safari 3.0

Background, text and colour

We have used text colours, size and background colours carefully so that it won’t adversely affect people with visual impairments. All pages on our website have been designed so that all information conveyed with colour can be understood without this facet.

Text

We’ve used Sifr text replacement for main headings. If Flash or JavaScript is not available then the user will see plain text. We’ve also formatted our body text so it is easily resizable in most modern browsers.

Tables

Tables are used only when presenting tabular data. They are not used as structural markup and are not nested. This will ensure that data remains easy to access.

Frames

Frames act as a barrier to accessibility and as such aren’t used within the Mamas & Papas website.

Images and other non-text elements

You can use our site without having to view images and other non-text elements. To aid understanding we have included alt (alternative) tags and title tags where applicable. There are very few purely decorative elements. If these are present then the alt attribute is left blank.

Scripts

We use JavaScript to enhance user experience. Examples of this can be found within some navigation points and on form fields. We are aware that this can act as a barrier to accessibility so endeavour to make all JavaScript unobtrusive and able to degrade gracefully.

Navigation

We've made navigation points consistent between our pages. A breadcrumb trail further assists understanding. The site can be navigated with scripting disabled.

Pop-up windows

We understand that spawning new windows can be confusing to our wide audience so only when appropriate are pop-up windows utilised. Acceptable cases could be if the user needs to view two windows simultaneously.
